The easiest way is by road: about 3 hours with a private driver or a rental car, and 4 to 6 hours by shared shuttle or public bus. There are also 30 to 50 minute domestic flights to La Fortuna's airport (FON).

The drive, step by step
Most of the trip is on mountain roads. From San José and the airport, drivers usually take one of two routes: west along the Inter-American Highway to San Ramón and then north on Route 702, or north through Sarchí, Zarcero and Ciudad Quesada.
Both are paved and both are winding, with curves, fog in the higher sections and heavy afternoon rain during the green season, from May to November. Plan on 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes without long stops.
If you're driving yourself for the first time in Costa Rica, try to do this stretch in daylight.
Your options compared
| Option | Time | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private driver | About 3 h, door to door | Families, groups, luggage and stops along the way | Book ahead and share your flight time |
| Shared shuttle | 4 to 6 h | Solo travelers on a budget | Fixed times and several pickups along the way |
| Public bus | 4 to 6 h | The lowest cost | Transfers, limited luggage space, and the departure terminal has changed |
| Rental car | About 3 h | Independent travelers | Winding mountain roads, navigation and parking |
| Domestic flight | 30 to 50 min in the air | Saving time | Luggage limits and a ride from the airstrip to your hotel |
A note on buses: some online guides still send travelers to Terminal 7-10 in San José, which stopped operating for this route in April 2025. Confirm the current terminal and timetable before you go.
Stops worth making
With a private driver the trip doesn't have to be a straight transfer. On the northern route, these are classic stops:
- SarchíThe town of the painted oxcarts, Costa Rica's best-known handicraft, with workshops you can visit.
- ZarceroA mountain town famous for the sculpted cypress gardens in front of its church.
- A local soda for lunchSmall family restaurants where you can try a casado, the everyday Costa Rican plate.

Landing at SJO and heading straight to La Fortuna
Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is in Alajuela, west of San José, so you don't need to drive into the city. If your flight lands in the afternoon you'll arrive in La Fortuna after dark. That's no problem with a local driver; if you're renting a car, consider spending your first night near the airport.
